1890-1990 Cien Años de Cámaras Españolas (1890-1990 A Hundred Years of Spanish Cameras) is the title of the first book published in Spain or anywhere else on cameras of Spanish manufacture from the invention of photography to the present day. In the book, written by the historian and collector Gerardo Acereda Valdés, over two hundred and fifty cameras are listed and some one hundred and forty photographs of cameras are included. For the moment, the book is only available in Spanish. Not only is this new book the sole publication on the camera industry in Spain, but it is also an extremely complete and accurate guide to a little-known industrial activity which nevertheless played a very important part in the popularisation of photography in Spain. For over a decade Gerardo Acereda has gathered information, data, documents and samples of cameras which have permitted him to produce this interesting book, which according to the author «is merely intended to be a preliminary step in order to present a general view of the camera industry and the characteristics of the cameras located to the international photographic collecting fraternity». In the opinion of Jim McKeown, the author and editor of the prestigious guidebook «McKeown's Price Guide to Antique and Classic Cameras», 1890-1990 Cien Años de Cámaras Españolas is a methodical and meticulous piece of work which in my view rates with the best publications of its kind...». The book, illustrated with almost 140 photographs of cameras, together with numerous graphs and reproduction of leaflets, etc., begins with an introduction in which the author assesses the impact of the invention of photography in Spain and its corresponding effect on industry, and at the same time explains the methodology he has used to carry out his research. The bulk of the book, in which the various manufacturers and models of camera are presented in chronological order, is divided into two main sections: «Beginnings to the Spanish Civil War (1839-1936)» and «From the Spanish Civil War to the present (1939-1990)». In these two chapters the reader will find references ranging from the first Spanish camera, constructed in 1878, to the latest Werlisa cameras, made in 1988, when their manufacturer, Certex,S.A., went into temporary receivership. Information is also included on the world's first 35 mm camera, patented by the company Lleó y Asociados, in 1908. Likewise, detailed information can be found on makes such as Agfa, Anaca, Capta, Kodak, Lirba, Mampel Asens, Nera, Oliver Salleras, Solyka, Univex y Werlisa, among others. 1890-1990 Cien Años de Cámaras Españolas (1890-1990 A Hundred Years of Spanish Cameras) closes with various appendices, a bibliography and a general index of the two hundred and forty cameras included in it. This book will be of great interest both to camera collectors, dealers and for all those who in one way or another have played or are playing an important part in the field of photography, as well as to historians and photographic enthusiasts and professionals in general. * Gerardo Acedera Valdés is a photographic historian and collector who owns perhaps the most complete collection of cameras manufactured in Spain, and who has collaborated on the «McKeown's Price Guide to Antique and Classic Cameras» and other specialised publications.
